How to Care for Your Kanchipuram Silk Saree

A pure Kanchipuram silk saree is not just a garment. It is an investment. A piece of heritage that carries the work of skilled weavers from Tamil Nadu, the weight of real mulberry silk, and the brilliance of genuine zari. Treat it well and it will last generations. Treat it carelessly and even the most expensive saree will lose its life within a few years.
Here is everything you need to know about caring for your Kanchipuram silk saree the right way.
Cleaning - First Clean and Beyond

The first time you clean your Kanchipuram saree, always go to a professional dry cleaner.
The first clean sets the foundation. A new Kanchipuram saree has sizing, starch, and finish from the weaving process. A professional dry cleaner who handles silk will remove this properly without disturbing the weave, the zari, or the colour. This is non-negotiable for the first wash.
After the first dry clean, gentle home care works well. Hand wash in cold water using a mild shampoo. Never use regular detergent or soap. Submerge the saree gently and press the fabric softly. Never wring or twist it. Twisting places tension on the weave and can cause threads to loosen over time. Never machine wash under any circumstances.
Ironing - Roll Press Gently
Before wearing, roll press the saree gently for a clean, elegant drape.
Never use high heat directly on the fabric. Always use the lowest heat setting. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree before pressing. Iron on the reverse side of the fabric only. This protects the natural sheen of the silk and the texture of the zari from direct heat damage.
Air It Out After Every Wear
After wearing your saree, always allow it to air out before storing.
Body heat and moisture from wear need to escape fully before the saree is folded and put away. Lay it flat or hang it gently in a clean, well-ventilated space for a short while. Never fold and store immediately after wearing. This small habit makes a big difference to how long the fabric stays fresh and vibrant.
Storing the Right Way

How you store your saree matters as much as how you clean it.
Always fold along the pleats, never against them. Folding against the pleats creates sharp creases that weaken the fabric over time. Wrap the folded saree in soft cotton or muslin cloth before storing. Muslin allows the silk to breathe while protecting it from dust and friction. Never store in a plastic bag or plastic cover. Plastic traps moisture and creates the perfect conditions for mildew, which damages both the silk and the zari.
Refold your saree periodically. If a saree sits in the same fold for months, those crease lines deepen and weaken the fabric. A simple refold every few weeks is all it takes to prevent permanent damage.
Protecting the Zari

The zari is the most delicate part of any Kanchipuram saree and deserves extra care.
Never spray perfume, deodorant, or hairspray while wearing your saree. The chemicals in these products react with the silver or gold coating on the zari thread and cause it to tarnish faster than it should. Always get fully dressed first, then drape your saree.
When folding for storage, place a thin layer of tissue paper between the zari folds. This prevents the gold threads from catching on each other or on the silk during storage.
